Ajaib Group, an Indonesian fintech company, is hiring a Staff/Principal Backend Engineer for a fully remote role. The company recently raised a $270M Series C round, described as the largest funding round in Southeast Asia in the past four years, with investors including Y Combinator, Ribbit Capital, SoftBank, and SBI Holdings. The team is distributed across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia. In this role, you serve as one of the highest technical leaders, shaping the architecture and technical direction of core platforms and services. You will work across multiple engineering teams to address complex technical challenges, set engineering standards, and keep systems scalable, reliable, secure, and performant. Responsibilities include defining long-term technical architecture and engineering direction across teams; leading the design, development, and evolution of highly scalable, fault-tolerant, and secure distributed systems; reviewing critical system designs and offering architectural guidance; driving engineering excellence through best practices in software design, system reliability, observability, security, and performance optimization; partnering with Engineering Managers on cross-team challenges; mentoring senior engineers; identifying technical risks and evaluating trade-offs; leading technical investigations, root cause analysis, and improvements for large-scale production systems; collaborating with Product, Platform, Infrastructure, Security, and Business teams; and staying hands-on with implementation for critical components when needed. Requirements: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience. Extensive professional software engineering experience with a track record of building large-scale distributed systems and leading technical architecture. Highly proficient in Java, Go, or other modern backend languages. Strong expertise in microservices, event-driven architectures, cloud-native application design, reliability engineering, observability, and performance optimization. Deep practical experience with messaging systems (Kafka), caching layers (Redis), and relational/NoSQL databases with query tuning and optimization. Experience designing and operating applications on modern cloud platforms (GCP, AWS) and hybrid infrastructures. Strong background in fintech or high-scale, highly regulated environments, with exceptional communication skills to influence technical decisions without direct authority.
