WVTF Northern Broadcast Engineer Virginia Tech is seeking a Northern Broadcast Engineer to provide support and coverage for the northern tier of the WVTF/Radio IQ Public Radio transmission network and studio. The role is part of the WVTF/Radio IQ Engineering team. This is a remote position, with work primarily conducted at transmitter sites in the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Charlottesville areas. Core duties involve transmitter site upkeep, site documentation, handling transmission alarms, site projects, and providing studio support. Tasks may include RF transmitter maintenance and troubleshooting, studio transmitter link upkeep and troubleshooting, building maintenance, cleaning, documentation, operational verification, audio monitoring, and basic networking and IT troubleshooting. Candidates must be able to work independently and take initiative, demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, understand schematic diagrams, coordinate and schedule with vendors, and operate electronic test equipment. Required qualifications include demonstrated experience in RF transmitter maintenance or a related technical field, experience with electronics troubleshooting and test equipment usage, experience with building and grounds maintenance and hand tool use, experience with IT networking, strong attention to detail with the ability to multitask, strong interpersonal and communication skills, a valid driver’s license with a solid driving record, and reliable transportation. Preferred qualifications include the ability to use a volt ohm meter, oscilloscope, and miscellaneous test equipment; Society of Broadcast Engineer certification; practical knowledge of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and basic construction techniques; familiarity with NPR and public broadcasting, WVTF Public Radio/RADIO IQ and its broadcast coverage area; and experience working for a state university or non-profit organization. Pay Band 3. Non-Exempt overtime status, eligible for overtime. Appointment Type: Restricted. Salary: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour, 25-30 hours per week. Review Date: November 8th, 2026. Work conditions include hearing, moderate to heavy lifting (25+lbs), working in outside elements (e.g., weather), safe driving record, considerable walking, standing, bending, stooping, vision (discern colors, contrast, depth), hand/finger dexterity, routine travel or telework (50% or more travel), on call as assigned. Mileage is paid per the yearly federal mileage rate. Basic hand tools and an engineering laptop will be provided. The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
